Quilt Repair

I have been quilting vintage tops and repairing vintage and newer quilts for close to ten years. I never tire of hearing the stories behind them.  Grandma, aunt, mom, family friend made this for me when I was little, got married, graduated from school.   My mom hand pieced these blocks but passed away before she could finish.  We found these quilts in the shed after dad passed.  Every story is different, every story is special.

So I do what I can to finish the old top, or put the blocks together and complete the quilt.   Cover the frayed edges with vintage fabric and rebuild the blocks in the middle that over times have ripped or frayed.  The thread can rot, so seams have to be sewn back together. I get a good deal of work from animals, usually dogs.  They loved to rearrange a bed cover to make it more comfortable for them, forgetting that their nails will rip the fabric.  It is usually in the middle of the quilt.   Occasionally, mice will make a nest in the closet where the quilts are, so I rebuild where the nest was and I have a method to clean the quilt so the smell and some or all the stains disappear.

There have been a few that just cannot be repaired.  In that case, if possible, I can make table runners, pillows, small throws and even Christmas stockings from sections still in good shape.  I have even divided up a quilt as multiple family members wanted it; it was the original creator's decision to do so to avoid fights after she passed.  It worked and she got to give to each person herself to see them enjoy her quilt.

If you have a special quilt that needs some love, I will be happy to help you.  When we do make contact, be it in person, over the phone or by email, be sure to tell me the story.

How to get an estimate for repair

If you live around the Nashville TN area, my studio is located north in White House.  Use the contact page to make an appointment.   Otherwise you can email me pictures using the contact page.  I need pictures of the whole front and back, along with closeup of all areas needing work.  If you need a quilt top or need blocks finished, I need the size of the top and pictures.  For blocks, I would need pictures of the blocks.    I can give a rough estimate back, however, when items are shipped to  me,  I will give a firm estimate after I see them in person.
